About Us

Our Story

Bird Island Bungalows was discovered by a young American entrepreneur, Alex, in 2015. At the time, the 12-acre property included a modest home and a guest bungalow nestled on a cliff overlooking the largely undeveloped Drago coast of Isla Colón. Alex, with his wife Kat, had the vision to transform the house into a hotel, and to create an unprecedented travel experience in Bocas del Toro. Over two years they built new facilities -- expanding the main house, adding the pool, the jungle house, decks, and two more bungalows. Bird Island Bungalows first opened its doors to guests in late 2018. The current owners, Mari and Kit, purchased the property in 2023.

Bird Island eco resort Bocas del Toro

Bird Island Bungalows is a remote eco-resort. Our electricity comes from the sun, water from the clouds. We share our sweet stretch of jungle with birds, bugs, sloths and monkeys. The road is unpaved, and the sea is unpredictable. It is peaceful, but not quiet – between breaking waves chattering critters there is rarely a dull moment. If you’re not sure if Bird Island Bungalows is the right fit for you, please review "Ten Things to Know" before booking, or contact us directly.
